About the Biodiversity Council

The Biodiversity Council is an independent expert group founded by 11 Australian universities to promote evidence-based solutions to Australia’s biodiversity crisis.

Our mission is to be a trusted expert voice communicating accurate information on Australia’s most pressing biodiversity issues to the community, businesses and governments to ensure biodiversity and Country prosper.

Our Biodiversity Councillors are leading experts, in science, Indigenous knowledge, law, policy, economics, behaviour change and communications. Scroll down to see our people.

Who is behind the Biodiversity Council?

The Biodiversity Council is a not-for-profit initiative. Our work is funded through the generous contributions of donors including individual community members. Our work is also enabled by our expert councillors who donate their time to council activities to improve outcomes for nature in Australia. Our establishment was supported by like-minded philanthropists. (See footer for the full list of who is involved).

First Peoples expertise and perspectives are fundamental to the council and our work. We have First Peoples representation at all levels of decision making in the council.

The council is supported by a small executive team with expertise in media and communications, stakeholder engagement and policy innovation. Our operations are hosted by The University of Melbourne with additional oversight from an advisory board.
