About the Biodiversity Council
The Biodiversity Council is an independent expert group founded by 11 Australian universities to promote evidence-based solutions to Australia’s biodiversity crisis.
Our mission is to be a trusted expert voice communicating accurate information on Australia’s most pressing biodiversity issues to the community, businesses and governments, to motivate effective evidence-based action to ensure biodiversity and Country prosper.
Our Biodiversity Councillors are leading experts, in science, Indigenous knowledge, law, policy, economics, behaviour change and communications. Scroll down to see our people.

Who is behind the Biodiversity Council?
The Biodiversity Council is a not-for-profit initiative. Our work is funded through the generous contributions of donors including individual community members. Our work is also enabled by our expert councillors who donate their time to council activities to improve outcomes for nature in Australia. Our establishment was supported by like-minded philanthropists (see footer for the full list of who is involved).
First Peoples expertise and perspectives are fundamental to the Council and our work. We have First Peoples representation at all levels of decision making in the Council.
The Council is supported by a small executive team with expertise in media and communications, stakeholder engagement and policy innovation.
We extend our sincere thanks to our Founding Advisory Board for their leadership, expertise and commitment in shaping the Biodiversity Council from its earliest days. Their guidance has been instrumental in establishing a strong, independent voice for nature. Founding Advisory Board Members include: Professor John Thwaites AM, Professor Moira O'Bryan, Dr Jennifer Gray, Mr Cullen Gun, Professor Bredley Moggridge and Mr David Robb.
