Professor Graeme Cumming
The University of Western Australia
Professor Graeme Cumming recently joined the University of Western Australia as a Premier's Science Fellow and is a professor in the UWA Oceans Institute.
Graeme's current research focuses on the role of protected areas in building coastal resilience and sustainability in the face of climate and socioeconomic pressures. He is a land- and seascape ecologist who works to understand broad-scale patterns and processes in nature and how their interactions influence ecosystem and social-ecological system function and resilience.
Graeme grew up in Harare, Zimbabwe. His conservation research has taken him across the globe; Graeme has studied or worked in South Africa, the U.K., Wisconsin, Florida and South Africa (again). Graeme arrived in Australia in 2015 to join James Cook University (JCU), Queensland, as a professor. While at JCU he spent two and a half years as the Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University.
"I have joined the Council in the hopes of influencing the governance and policy processes that are central to both the long-term conservation of biodiversity and the maintenance of human wellbeing. I believe that a combination of rigorous science and diverse, interdisciplinary and cross-cultural knowledge and perspectives will be critical for making wise choices and sensible long-term decisions that benefit Australia’s future." - Professor Graeme Cumming
