Biodiversity Council submission to the Draft National Roadmap for protecting and conserving 30% of Australia's land by 2030

Submission

21 July 2024

Download

The Australian Government has committed to a national target to protect and conserve 30% of Australia’s land and 30% of its marine areas by 2030 (referred to as the 30 by 30 target). All state and territory environment ministers agreed to work together to achieve this national 30 by 30 target. The national 30 by 30 target aligns with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework under the Convention on Biological Diversity.

The National Roadmap will coordinate national action for achieving the national 30 by 30 target on land. To achieve this target on land, Australia would need to protect an additional 60 million hectares of land in six years. One of our key concerns is that draft Roadmap does not outline the actions the Federal Government will take to achieve the 30 by 30 target. Our submission explains our concerns about the draft Roadmap and makes seven recommendations.
