Improvements we need from the next Australian Government
We’ve identified the key actions we’d like to see the next government take to safeguard and restore nature. They cover 4 key areas:
- Strengthen Australia's environmental laws
- Empower Indigenous Australians to manage Country and benefit from Traditional Knowledge
- Increase investment in the protection and restoration of nature
- Ensure nature is central to decision-making across business and government
Research shows this is what the majority of Australians want
You can also let your candidates know that you are not alone in wanting a better deal for the environment.
For the past three years we’ve commissioned Monash University’s BehaviourWorks Australia to survey the Australian community to understand their attitudes towards nature.
The latest survey of 3,500 people echoes the findings of the previous two years – a large silent majority of the Australian community wants the Australian Government to do better for nature.
- Three-quarters (75%) of Australians support strengthening our national environmental laws. And just one in every 25 Australians (4%) are opposed to environmental law reform.
- Currently, just 6 cents of every $100 of the federal budget is allocated to nature conservation. Ninety-five per cent of people want the Australian Government to spend more, and three-quarters of people think spending should be increased to at least 2% of the federal budget.
- Almost three-quarters (72%) of Australians support establishing new national parks to protect natural and cultural values, and only 5% of people are opposed. And no matter which party they represent, their voters are at least 7 times more likely to want new national parks than oppose them.
Voting for nature
There can be a lot of spin during an election campaign, so to help people in the Australian community make an informed choice that meets their expectations, we are going to do the analysis for you.
We have asked all major and minor parties and key independents to declare how they will protect the environment. Then a panel of our experts from science, policy, Indigenous Knowledge, law and economics will review the policy commitments from to see what they are promising for nature. So touch back in with us in the coming weeks.
