Catherine Lovelock is a Professor at the School of Environment at The University of Queensland. She is an Australian marine ecologist who specialises in coastal ecosystems.
Catherine is a global expert on the impacts of climate change on coastal wetlands (mangroves, saltmarshes and seagrass) as well as the role of coastal wetlands in climate change mitigation (also known as Blue Carbon). Her research has focussed on mangrove ecology and on the impacts of sea level rise on coastal wetlands and on carbon storage in coastal wetland ecosystems.
Catherine is a member of the International Scientific Blue Carbon Working Group of The Blue Carbon Initiative. She was lead author for the International Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) Wetlands chapter (2019), and contributes to national and international policy to implement conservation and restoration of coastal wetlands to enhance resilience of coastal communities.
"I’m a Councillor of the Biodiversity Council because conserving Australia’s biodiversity is fundamental for our society. We have everything to gain by caring for the ecosystems of the coastal zone and their biodiversity. We will have more fish, birds and other plants and animals, we will be better prepared for climate change, and in the process, we can improve livelihoods and justice." - Professor Catherine Lovelock
