Protecting all of Australia’s species at risk of extinction
Factsheet
1 December 2022
Australians are proud of our amazing wildlife and nature, but ongoing extinctions are costing us this priceless natural legacy. We could and should do much more to protect our species threatened with extinction. Australian Government laws aim to protect species by listing all those threatened with extinction in order to generate recovery actions. But, with funding spread too thin, the current strategy of prioritising some of these listed species over others leaves many of our precious threatened species behind.
This factsheet provides a snapshot of Australia's extinction record, the numbers of native plants and animal at risk of going extinct next, and the solutions needed to save all species.
